In a world where most things are mass-produced, Mervyn Gers Ceramics in Cape Town is keeping the spirit of craftsmanship alive.

This journey dates back to 2010. Picture three guys in a garage, one kiln, and a load of spirit. Formally founded in 2011, the brand is now internationally celebrated for its one-of-a-kind ceramic pieces and handmade dinnerware.

Keeping things Cape Town, everything etched with Mervyn Gers’s name on it is made locally, by hand, and is completely unique. The two gentlemen who kickstarted this success story in a garage with Gers are still making magic alongside the company’s founder today.

Based in Paarden Eiland, Mervyn Gers Ceramics is currently home to 14 kilns and employs over 48 staff. It’s an ode to sustainable job creation, and is continuously expanding its offerings through innovation.

Mervyn Gers Ceramics is putting the artistry back into production. A core value that’s contributed to pieces flying off shelves and into homes and establishments alike. And now, you can take this philosophy one step further by customising your very own Mervyn Gers dinnerware set.

Design enthusiasts, trendsetters, and people who just love art (and throwing a gorgeous dinner party) are invited to enjoy this truly unique experience. It’s a bespoke design service that has the celebration of the artist at heart.

“Our service is aimed at those shying away from the world of mass production, those who want to make their own mark on their interior and lifestyle. Custom production not only guarantees individuality, but also creates much-needed jobs,” says Gers.

Your dream dinnerwear journey begins with a 90-minute consultation at the Mervyn Gers Ceramics headquarters in Paarden Eiland. Here, you’ll be treated to a tour of the workshop, have a chance to meet the artists, and catch a glimpse of the glorious process. Then, the real fun begins.

From colours and glazes to designs and composition, you custom create your perfect set. You can even feature your family crest, names and symbols – if you wish. Mix and match or keep things classic. You take the reigns from start to finish.

All products are fully functional for daily use, food safe as well as dishwasher and microwave safe. As with all truly handmade ceramics, slight variations in colour and size may occur, which adds an interesting dimension to the glazes.

The clay itself is manufactured in-house and its industry-standard durability is thanks to years of research and development, with ongoing input from industry experts, including the University of Cape Town’s chemical  engineering department.

In addition to its commitment to sustainable job creation, the company is on a mission to reduce waste. So, when your set is ready to be delivered, you can bet on it arriving wrapped in recycled and recyclable packaging. They recycle their clay as well.

Over the years, Mervyn Gers Ceramics has made bespoke ceramics and dinnerware for established wine and game farms, hotels and restaurants including Beau Constantia, Boschendal, Chef’s Table, Chefs Warehouse, De Grendel, Garonga Safari Company, Klein Jan, La Colombe, Londolozi Game Reserve, Marble, Mwiba Lodge, Otjiwa Safari Lodge, Schoon, Singita, Springfontein Wine Estate, Taj, Tasha’s, Tintswalo Atlantic, Vergelegen, Wilderness Safaris, Xanadu Zanzibar, and more.
